The message I replied to was unquestionably a top-post.

The preferred quoting method on most technical mailing lists is to
insert comments after the material being referred to, and to trim
anything extraneous. This may happen several times in a reply to a long
message, and readers are no more likely to be confused than by the
practice (pulled over from the corporate world and especially from
Outlook which many other MUAs have copied) of commenting at the start
followed by a complete dump of the message being replied to, often
including previous replies to replies to replies, which not only makes
it harder to associate each comment with the relevant point, but is
unnecessary on a mailing list with a full archive of posts.
