Threading doesn't just work on the subject - there are threading
headers which allows the emails to be placed in the correct position in
the threads when you reply to a message.

I suspect the easiest way is to submit a Debian bug and point to the
Evolution bug report (and link to the thread(s) here) and ask them to
backport the patch.

It's a fairly simple patch - I don't use Debian so I'm not sure how
well it will be received. You should read up on all this on the Debian
web site rather than asking here (which is a distro agnostic place).
