I have now uninstalled the flatpak version and installed the native
version.  As you predicted I was able to keep most of the settings and
data by copying them from my backup into the corresponding folders of
the new installation.  In the process, I noticed that the flatpak
installation apparently lacked an evolution-data-server.  This made me
wonder if it was using the older evolution-data-server installed
natively. If it was, could the version mismatch have been responsible
for the weird behavior of the flatpak installation?
OTOH, the first time I attempted a "Group Reply" to this topic using
the new installation, Evolution crashed. ;-}
