No doubt a mistaken assumption on my part. I just couldn't find
anything like data-server in any of my copies of
~/.var/app/org.gnome.Evolution/

Sorry not to provide more data, but I didn't see any way to collect a
backtrace. The system crash notification didn't provide that option.
IAC, it probably isn't worth your time to troubleshoot such an old
version. On two separate occasions when I clicked on "Group Reply"
(for two different mailing lists), Evolution (3.52.3) first hung and
when I tried to click again it crashed (i.e. the GUI disappeared
without a trace and without an error message) I was unable to restart
Evolution until I rebooted the PC.
This time, "Group Reply" worked.
