Because you haven't told it not to? (There's a tick-box under
"Receiving  Options" in the account editor to enable/disable checking
for new messages.)

[Start Evolution from the command line with 'evolution --offline' so
you can look at the config without it checking the folders.]

I suspect there is something wrong with that folder then - simple
questions, does it actually exist and is it readable?  Is the location
of the MH folder correct in the account config? (But I suspect if
either of those are the problem, it should just give up immediately!)

If you run Evolution from the command line does it give any errors?

Could the folder format have become corrupted?
