I only looked briefly into the script and it installs the files into
the system directory, which is useful for machines/systems used by
multiple users.

Maybe you could add a script (or an option to the existing script) to
install to the user directories instead, only for that single user.
What directory to use can be found near the end of the section [1].

If you'd like to support the Flatpak version, then the Flathub build
has an extension entry point [2], for which you can build Flatpak
version of your plugin similar as for example the evolution-etesync
does here [3].

That can open your plugin to even more users, and in case of the
Flathub, your plugin could be offered to the users as an available
addon when it has proper metainfo file (like the EteSync plugin does).
