But still, restricting Evolution to use a single connection does seem
to cure problems - perhaps it's just inconsistencies in how different
servers deal with it and restricting to a single connection normalises
everything.

My experience is that using a single connection doesn't adversely
affect things - but I don't have a vast amount of mail these days and
certainly nothing very big - I also don't download everything.
