I am now convinced this is an issue with Evolution, because I just had
the exact same behavior happen to the Inbox folder in my GMail account:
I had two new messages, I deleted both (with C-d), and rather than
going away they sat there, struck through.
Not only that, but the count of unread messages in the sidebar does not
change (e.g., in the above situation it stayed as "2").
I waited about 25 seconds with nothing happening, then switched to a
different folder and almost immediately the messages went away and the
"unread message" count was updated.
