Checked
~/.config/mimeapps.list

which had the nasty entry:
x-scheme-
handler/mailto=mutt.desktop;org.gnome.Evolution.desktop;firefox_firefox
.desktop;
But removing the 'mutt' thing didn't help. 

Then, went to GNOME settings and checked default mail handler. But is
was evolution; tried to install mutt, set it to mutt and back to evo -
again no success.
