In fact, the "Failed to open file" message is justified:
Under "/etc/dconf/db", there is no file "<username>".
Instead, there is a directory "<username>.d".
The message "No such file or directory" seems therefore wrong.
The situation with "/etc/dconf/db/machine" is similar.
There is no file by that name. However, there is a directory,
"/etc/dconf/db/machine.d"
