	Hi,
it depends on couple things, like:
* what is your folder ordering?
* do you group by thread?
* was the selected message the last/first in the list, or somewhere
  "in the middle" of the list?
* do you hide deleted messages in the message list?

Another aspect is your version. It's more than year and a half old,
it's not supported (in a sense of expecting any fixes from here) for
more than a year now. It would be great if you could test this with the
latest stable series (3.58.x at the moment), whether it's still the
problem with it. A usual way to get fixes into such old version is to
ask your distribution maintainers to backport the fixes, if such fixes
exist. They decided to support that old version in their distro, thus
it's up to them. That's why they call the distro "Long Term Support",
after all.
