In Maintain 2.4 we used to call these improperly registered hosts, or something to that effect.  Personally, I believe that there should be options available to the user:

1)  Delete all child objects to the range
    - Yes - All child objects are deleted, then the range is deleted
    - No/Cancel - Range is left intact

2)  Update all child objects to use a different range
