It isn't as easy as just "installing it" for your device like you would
in the x86 world. You need a particular kernel and userspace build only
for your device, containing drivers particularly for it, so there's no
way of installing a generic image and seeing what works.

There might be some free software support for your device already, or
you may have to write a big part of it.
