Contacts and calendar used to be my biggest backup concern too -- but
after moving to DAVDroid and CalDavSyncAdapter (I need both -- DAVDroid
is more polished but can't talk to Google's CalDAV server) and setting
up a CalDAV server on my own, this is now no pain at all. I use
ownCloud, but if you don't want the non-contact/calendar-bloat, some of
the other CalDAV servers are really easy to setup.
I wrote a small note file to document my replicant configuration steps,
and now when I move between phones (usually when I crack the screen) or
upgrade, and have some time, I go through the note file and then input
username/passwords in all apps, and I'm ready to go. If I'm in a hurry
I use oandbackup from the old phone and restore the apps I need on the
new phone.
