Just plugging a compatible cable should work, if I remember well it can
detect it trough the ID pin. I could try if you want with a mass
storage USB key and the cable (I've got one).

That's another story, first how much mA does it uses? Then it probably
need a driver and maybe some userspace application/code. I didn't look
if there is something in F-droid for userspace.
For some devices there is (Example: some GPS dongle might work).
I'm very interested in it to be able to use wifi stick compatible with
free software that can consume about 100mA max, but I didn't find any
yet. I don't remember but I'm unsure that the ath9k_htc can physically
consume so few mA as maximum.
