As I understand it, their strategy was to manufacture common
hardware(Not very low or niche laptops), and to use a best-effort
mechanism concerning freedom while doing it.
They hope to succeed in convincing chip manufacturer, to permit freedom,
that way.
What was problematic is that their website didn't reflect that, and
contained information that made people think that the computer they
would buy would, was running only free software or would permit to run
only free software at some point.
As they went along, they corrected many of the errors on their website.
Note that I didn't extensively looked at the website recently.

While I don't have much hope that the laptop they made
(The Librem 11,13,15) will be able to run fully free software when
still being relevant, the preliminary approach regarding their
smartphone seem much more realistic in terms of freedom.
If I were to design a smartphone, I would chose the same SOC family.
I would also have made many of the decisions they made with it.
Denis.
