Indeed, this sounds strange. It would have been good to have UART to see
what happens ;)
Did you flash a new bootloader when flashing the stock image? Some
resistor values might change the behaviour and some image you flashed as
part of the stock ROM could have caused a reset. But I'm only
speculating and I don't know what is possible with Samsung's proprietary
bootloader. And without more details about where exactly the boot fails,
it's hard to say what happened.
