heimdall or fastboot are used to install Replicant's recovery.
The recovery can then be used to install Replicant.

There are other ways to install a recovery, but they are more
complicated.

Why do you want to install Replicant without using heimdall:
- Because it's too complicated?
- Because you didn't succeed in using heimdall because of
  hardware/software issues like having a broken USB port?
